Durham - Rich History Reigns Supreme in This Little Town

History- Durham - Durham was officially founded in 1066 by King William who identified the town as the ideal location for reigning over the town of Northumbria and for fighting off Scottish troops. However Durham's history dates further back to the arrival of religious communities who built wooden and stone churches next to the burial ground of their religious leader St Cuthbert of Lindisfarne.

Location- The picturesque town of Durham with it's population of 42939, is situated 21 Kilometres, South-West of Sunderland, England in the United Kingdom. Durham is a beautiful town boasting with endless hills, forests, rivers and meanders.

Weather- The town's weather is rather moderate to cold with minimum temperatures of 5.2 and maximum temperature of 12.5 Degrees Celsius, with lower rainfall than in the rest of the UK averaging at 44 inches per year. Air frost is less and sunshine more common in area when compared to other parts of England.

Must see's- The Durham Cathedral is an absolute must-see, featuring the finest and most beautiful Norman architecture on earth. The Cathedrals' construction began in 1093 and was completed in 1135. The building contains relics, texts and plates embodying the rich history of the town. Durham Castle built in 1072, is the ultimate tourist attraction containing the Great Hall, a 57ft Black Staircase made from oak and the Norman Chapel. The castles' 15th century kitchen is still in use today producing some wonderful function and festival foods. The castle has been in use uninterruptedly for more than 900 years.

Entertainment- The Gala Theatre and Cinema is the centrepiece of the towns arts programme, boasting with a 500 seat auditorium, hosting various live events and even it's own theatre productions. The theatre forms part of the GBP30 million Millennium City development project.
